Brief 02 Logo

Naming the brand

I chose to keep the same name, even if the website is not attractive there are many people who use it. It's important to not disturb the current consumers with a different name.

Logo

The current 'logo'_

In my opinion I can not keep the design elements for the new logotype. However, change everything is a risky business. Logos are like anything else that has been created- they are very subjective, so drastic changes will always split opinions. But here it seems really necessary.

So I focused my research on the brand's name Anglais facile.

Facile synonym_

accessible
clear
effortless
obvious
painless
simple
smooth
straightforward
basic
child's play
elementary

By the way this words selection give my clues for my web surface, it should be minimal and lean towards the flat design.

Phrases which means 'facile'_

les doigts dans le nez
easy peasy lemon squeezy

about the colours_

I've already defined the colours that I should avoid. Plus, the words elementary, child's game and basic give me an idea. I should use the primary colours for my logo. It is a group of colours from which all other colours can be obtained by mixing. It reminds me the educational world and the primary school, when we had to learn everything. I think it is appropriate with my website.

about the symbole_

I chose to work on the symbol "peace" which also represents the V of victory. Indeed learning and improving your English can be link with a little victory. Plus in France it reminds the phrase "les doigts dans le nez".

However I have some worries about this symbole in UK, indeed I read that it means the same thing as giving the middle finger in America, and will get you in trouble. This means that ‘You’re a wanker’. This is the most insulting hand movement in the UK and if you use it, you’ll probably end up in a fight.
But I realised the rude movement is when your index and middle finger held up with your palm facing toward you. So there are two signs close but with really different meaning, we can't confuse the UK's movement with the V for Victory.

I also tried to do a logotype with the A and the F of anglais facile, the brand's initials. Basically to do a monogram. I mixed the letter A and F, it's a way to link them. Also, I work with rounded shapes to give some flexibility at my work.

And I realise with the same straight lines I can do the peace symbole as well. Same colours, same size, same associations.

That's why I tried to find a way to have both on one logotype

Logo attempts_

and separately_

I made a survey to chose the final logotype. People enjoyed the most the last one. So do I. Indeed I think there is too many elements when both symboles are together. Plus, in my opinion longer logotype is a quality for a website.

FINAL LOGO

about the typography_

I prefer the caps letters for my logotype. I think visually speaking it's more appropriate because of the straight lines. It suits better. Besides, I chose The Mix font because of the 'G' letterform. It's like it's one and single line. I didn't find the same G shape with another sans serif typography. It's clear, simple and without any disturbing elements.

Brief 02 Content

CONTENT

Then, I need to sort out all the website content. As I mentioned before, there is a massive content but it is not organised at all.

Home page_

  • Logo
  • Baseline (Cours d'anglais 100% gratuit)
  • Subscribe

  • Test de niveau
  • Cours
  • Exercices
  • Détente
  • Examens

  • Of the day
Indeed when I checked everything I found an interesting topic "du jour". The idea is to have this content on the homepage. So, the user can visit the website once a day every day and directly learn something without clicking anywhere. I thought about different categories, named: The word of the day, the phrase of the day, the irregular verb of the day and the quote of the day. It will be a fun way of learning about culture and facts.

Brief 02 Design Research

RESEARCH

_In on hand, I would like for my website something really different from the current website. Simply, modern and flat design. It is any element that does not include or give the perception of three dimensions.

Not only is flat design is easier for users to comprehend, but it can also load more quickly on websites without complicated or overly-technical elements.

Some website research_

It is minimal design and I realised that web designers opt for large picture or video. In fact Videos or pictures can add a lot to a page. In addition, video and pictures are processed 60 000 times faster by our brains compared to text. While people are often hesitant to read heavy blocks of text, videos and pictures appear effortless and can be consumed very quickly.

_On other hand I found really interesting website, uncommon and different. The browsing is entirely managed by illustrations. I found it cool, attractive and fun. It's more interactive and interesting

So I could imagine an illustration which represent the England ambiance. Each item will be link with a content. Plus when you hover over an illustration it animates.

A roughly scheme_

Indeed, French people when the learn English want also be a part of the England culture. The illustration could be a way to involved them in it. It engages with reader more than flat images. But I was quite worried about it, maybe it's too ambitious (animation speaking) and not really necessary to learn English, so I asked for some feedback.
In fact most of them think it would be better to keep the website modern, maybe just as effective without the animation and that I should be careful about target age.
It was a really formative feedback and I finally ditch this idea for my English learning website. However I keep it warm for perhaps a next website project.

_Afterwards I though about a website with different square shapes on it. Like a card design, or like the Windows 10 surface. In fact, individual cards help distribute information in a visual way so the visitors can easily consume bite-sized pieces of content without being overwhelmed. My aim is to classify all the informations. The reader have to chose his own way to learn and click on the shapes which is interesting in. He can also organise the shapes.

Research_

A roughly scheme_

We did a feedback session, as regards this idea:
+ good for personalised and organised what you already know / what you need to improve on.
- maybe too many square shapes will get confusing

Brief 02 Potential and limitation in design for screen

Why is website design so important?

  • Very often use_ Is it quick and easy to find something you need more information in. Plus if you can find what you’re looking for quickly and easily, it means the website has been designed well, in other words, the design of a website is important because it affects how quickly visitors can find what they are looking for
  • Cost Effective_ You know exactly how much your website is going to cost you.
  • Accessible around the clock_ Your website and social media accounts are accessible 24/7/365
  • Credibility_ A website will not only give you credibility but it will also help to give the impression that your company is bigger and more successful than it may actually be.

Design Limitations of Websites

  • Internet Limitations_ website designers still have to consider the physical limitation of network access when creating their websites. A fully interactive and animated website can create a stunning impact on the viewer, but the bandwidth required to download the site can overwhelm some slower connection

Brief 02 What are the main technical issues in web design?

It is my first website design experience so before building my website I have to know what kind of thing should I take care of.

Colours

The first main difference between print and web design is the colours. Indeed I will work in RVB instead of CMJN.

They are some tips to choose the good colours. First I have to think about my target audience, however I must avoid clichés to gain credibility. Then I need to avoid colours competitors, to eliminate them from my own color schemes.

Competitors_

Basically, I should avoid this colour scheme_

Resolution_

I found this this table that can be my guideline for my mediaqueries.

Screen widthSmallest screen heightIn use worldwide
Source: W3C, Jan 2016
1024 px768 px3%
1280 px800 px11%
1360 px768 px2%
1366 px768 px35%
1440 px900 px6%
1600 px900 px6%
1680 px1050 px3%
1920 px1080 px20%
2560 px and up1440 px1%

However I chose to use the resolution of my own mac, to have a batter quality.

Typographies_

Web typographies rules:
  • A preference for sans serif font. In fact, after research, pretty much every big block of text is set in a sans serif typeface, making it much easier to read. Headlines and other smaller blocks of text are laid out in serifed fonts, creating a balance between the two.)
  • Avoid the centered text can make a website design easy to read.
  • Take care with type colours, The easiest fix for that is to make sure that the colour of my type is drastically different from that of my background.
  • Type size: less than 12pt is not enough. Most, however, chose a larger size like 14px, which is even better for readability. Plus, readability in large titles is far easier to figure out than in body copy.

7- about the content?

  • 0%  1 out 5 stars
  • 7,14%  2 out 5 stars
  • 51,14%  3 out 5 stars
  • 28,57%  4 out 5 stars
  • 7,14%  5 out 5 stars

The average is 3,36 out of 5 stars

To conclude, I can say that people like learning/improving English. It is a way for them to have a great career, to discover the world and to be able to speak with a lot of people. So, there is a strong demand and a real need. Besides, everybody is looking for some help on the Internet, that's why, a website to help people in English will work really well.
As regards Anglais facile, most of them don't even know this website, and the others who know it don't use it. Plus, I am able, now, to identify the concurrence, named: Wordreferences, Google traduction, Reverso et Linguee
Finally the question 6 and 7 confirm what I thought. The content on the website is great but the design is not ok.

Brief 02 SWOT

Following our Tuesday lecture I decided to make a anglais facile's SWOT

What is it?

'SWOT analysis is a process where the management team identifies the internal and external factors that will affect the company's future performance. The company's strengths and weaknesses are the internal factors. Opportunities and threats deal with factors external to the company--environmental factors.' http://smallbuisness.com

In other words, SWOT can help to understand better a company, to target the different issues and then to fix them. It's like a report/an analysis about one company.

Why is it important?

Really useful for a company who want to progress or improve their skills and define the opportunities that they have but also they do the research because they want to learn about a competitor.

'That means you want to look to see all the competitors so you understand what your business will be up against. You will also have a thorough understanding of who you’re going to be competing with.' http://pestleanalysis.com/

Brief 02 Second idea

Because I'm an Erasmus student I spend a lot of time on website to learn English, to search vocabulary and the important rules. Most of the websites which give complete and clear course are not entirely free, that's really annoying. But I found a website with a loooot of content and knowledge. The fact is the website is, at first sight, not practical at all. That took me time to realise that the website is really helpful and good to learn English. Indeed, the design is so messy and old you don't want to stay 10min to search what you want on it.

Massive content and knowledge on the website but the communication doesn't work.

Couple of screenshots of the actual website:

BRIEF

Anglais Facile

Problem_

How do you connect with an audience who are open to the free English course website but not enthused by it? What is it about Anglais facile that isn’t clicking? Why no one uses it?

Target_

French
For all ages
Students

Professionals

Solution_

One thing is clear: a website has to look good.  And a professional, modern look can immediately build trust. The possibilities are endless but a good design will create trust and guide visitors to take action. So I have to sort out and simplify the current website.

Brief 02 First idea

My first idea it's to work on an app which deal with the books, I don't know why, this subject interested me, maybe because I would like to have more literature knowledge.

Problem_

I want to start reading but I hardly know where to start. Indeed I don’t know much about literature but I am interested in becoming a booklover. However I don’t want to waste my money in the average books, I need advices from an human being.

Or how to get expensive books (art book) when you are student.

Solution_

_app to rent/lend our own books

For a booklover, the books are an essential part of their life. Books represent something precious for them. They can’t sell it but maybe they want to share it, to give a second life to their books.
They can subscribe on the app, and make their own profile. Which books they are and what they think about it. The app works with geolocation, that’s why the person who wants to begin a book know who and which book they’re able to rent/lend.

Also a book reader can be curious about what their neighbour think about a particular book
Limite number of the books (ten per genre) - only the best

Target_

New reader

Booklover

Feedback_

maybe chose type of book?
choose genre
too many app/websites for book
people will be interesting in a favourite person-favourite book
bookface
date app, book the first thing to talk someone, avoiding awkward silent
Don’t judge a book about their cover

I’m quite lost about my feedback, the real aims of my first idea was the possibility to rent our own book, it’ll work with geolocation, that’s why the person who wants to begin a book know who and which book it’s able to rent. Also a book reader can be curious about what their neighbour think about a particular book. However, it seems that a date book app is a better idea for people. But I'm not sure I want to work on a date app.
They are a lot of this kind of app and I am not sure about the success of it.
