OUGD503 Evaluations

BRIEF 1

The final resolution is successful in terms of resolving the initial issues within the true crime genre. The majority of people in the survey and the feedback discussions had the same opinion: the concept should be strong and the front cover must work on its own. Looking back at the brief I think I have achieved what I set out to do. I have designed a new cover for the book In Cold Blood.
I have created a busy design that matches with the sotry of the book.
Firstly, I am pleased with the overall design

I created. I think the mess produced by the messy background helps understanding what the book are talking about in a better way. We are able to see all the tragedy and horror link with this true story in a glance.  With regards to the colours, I was a little worried by using only shades of black and grey. However, it turns out to be less cliché. I indeed think it is better than using red colour. It created a monochrome cover so the general look stays balanced.
Secondly, I do think the final outcome of my title is appropriate as the hand type I have designed is coherent and thought through.
Thirdly, I have been interested in the views
of other people regarding my design. With regards to the messy design people agreed that it is consistent with the brief. They told me it is powerful and efficient. They also found the back cover really interesting and enjoyable.
I however think I could change my text size, maybe 10pt is too small for this kind of design. I therefore think a 12pt would be more approriate. Regarding the background, generally people enjoyed the idea, they are able to recognise the concept which is to show the darkness and the mess inside the murderer’s minds. They also noticed that it can show the mess typical of murder scene. That’s why I think I achieved my goal to give it a creepy ambiance.
To conclude, I think my final cover is a success and it’s appropriate in relation to my original aim. Truman Capote's comprehensive study of the killings and subsequent investigation indeed explores the circumstances surrounding this terrible crime and the effect it had on those involved. So in other words the book deals with the reasons and motivation of the criminels killing that family. In addition, Capote applied also psychoanalysis to the crime. That’s why my final cover represents the murderer’s mind.

BRIEF 2

I thoroughly enjoyed this brief and the development of creating a book cover from start to finish. I have created an enjoyable and lively design that matches with the sotry of the book.
Firstly, researching current cover was the part that I most enjoyed. The initial question that I asked myself at the beginning of the project was “Should I choose to do an illustration for the book?” To answer this question it was all about the design of the other children book which I looked into in detail. I therefore noticed that every cover include illustration, many colours and a kind of hand drawn look.
I decided to try something I have never experimented before: drawing with the wrong hand. The experience was really good and the outcome was exactly what I wanted and added to the fl look of the cover as well as being consistent with the design of the children book.
In addition, the majority of people in the survey and the feedback discussions had the same opinion: the illustration of Adrian should be funnier. Then I tried other face expressions and chose the funniest one. After that, people was pleased with the overall design.
Secondly, with regards to the colours, I was not sure about  the white background. I didn’t want to have an empty cover, and it is not very recommended to have a white cover as we very often handle a book. I however wanted to respect the diary look. That’s why I kept the light and white background. Regarding the lines, generally people enjoyed the idea, they are able to recognise the hole concept which should represent torments of Adrian.
If I had to do the brief again, I would spend longer in the background of the book and make sure I was precise in every aspect. The overall aesthetic is what I wanted although I could have been a bit more creative for the back cover.
To conclude, I think my final book cover is a success and appropriate in relation to my original aim. It shows that Adrian is on adolescence period and he tries to deal with it with his diary.

BRIEF 3

The final resolution is successful in terms of resolving the initial issues, I created a new campaign for the brand MUBI. I thoroughly enjoyed this brief and the development of creating a poster from start to finish. Looking back at the brief I think I have achieved what I set out to do. I imagined a new way to encourage film lover to put their faith in MUBI.
Firstly, I am pleased with the overall design
I created. In my opinion hand draw typographies help to catch the attention of people. In addition, the pink with the white background create a strong contrast, so we are able to see and recognise the advertising from far.  However I think it could has been better if I had taken picture of real pepople. I indeed think it would has showed more professionalism.
Secondly, I have been interested in the views
of other people regarding my concept. The majority of people in the survey and the feedback discussions had the same opinion: sarcastic comments are strong concept and it works well with the brand that don’t want to be too arrogant and snob. With regards to the design they told me it is powerful and efficient. They also found the sticking interesting and enjoyable. However I should have drawn the comments with more frustration, it is therefore too straight and propely. But I was worried to create a too buzzy and messy design. Regarding the baseline, generally people enjoyed the idea, they are able to recognise the brand and what MUBI can offer to its target audience. They also noticed that it can show the fact that it is a real human being who select movies. That’s why I think I achieved my goal to show MUBI as an antidote to oversaturated choice and average film content.
If I had to do the brief again, I would spend longer in the colour choice of the poster and make sure I was precise in every aspect. The overall aesthetic is what I wanted although I could have been a bit more lively for the hand typographies.
To conclude, I think my final poster is a success and it’s appropriate in relation to my original aim. I would now create other posters and other fake bad film poster with the same sarcastic concept to creat a series.

SARCASTIC COMMENTS

To add frustration, I chose to write very sarcastic comments down around the new poster. The aim is to show film lover’s discontentment. I decided to be sarcastic because is less brutal for advertising. I wanted to keep  funny look to my final design.

FIRST ATTEMPT

After some feedback I realised that some of people don't understand the sarcastic way of the comments that'q why I added some little illustration which can show that

I also worked on the MUBI logotype, I indeed noticed it is composed by dots '...' that can add some suspense or increase the sarcastic way of comments. That's why I placed it after each comments on the poster.

OUGD503 Brief 03 First step

I chose to work on the second idea, I think it suits better with the target audience.
I used the sticking method to realise a new movie poster.
The goal is that potentiel consumer knows at a glance it is a bad film.

-crap love story
-average title which try to be funny
-not funny/repulsive characters
-rehash
-bad design
-lying (new)

OUGD503 Brief 03 Ideas

RESEARCH

I analysed what MUI has already done for its compaign

FIRST IDEA

Firstly I was interested by the fact that MUBI Instead of churning out thousands of films, they proudly present a choice selection of just 30 – each one handpicked by a human being with great taste, not an algorithm. So every film is guaranteed to be a quality watch.

I wanted to work on the fact that MUBI offer to its consumers only really good films. In other words, creating a poster that shows that ‘more’ doesn’t always mean ‘better’.

So my idea was to place movie posters (good, average or bad) on top to each other to make it illegible. In addition, adding the baseline ‘Quality or quantity?’.

So with a low opacity I tried some different design

SECOND IDEA

Secondly I chose to work with the baseline ‘Life is too short for bad films'.
It is an original baseline I found in the classic MUBI advertising. In my opinion, it's a strong concept and sentence. It powerful and it can catch the potential target audience's minds.

I wanted to show the frustration because of a bad movie. The brief indeed insist on this point. They are the antidote to that frustration. Plus the target audience is film lovers, these people  can have enough to waste many hours and settle for a average or mediocre movie.

Then I analysed film posters of bad movie to understand clcihé about it.
I visited the website allociné. They ranked the best of bad movies in the cinema history.

I selected few of them and tried to find what clues in the movie poster can alert the consumer it is gonna be a mediocre film.

OUDG503 MUBI Ressources

MUBI gave with the brief its Guideline

What are brand guidelines ?

Brand guidelines are a set of tools and rules on how to use your branding elements. The guidelines are used by designers, writers, and anyone else using your brand’s elements like your logo to create marketing materials.
The guidelines are usually presented in a book format that covers how your brand works and how the different elements of your brand work together to form your brand identity.

there are three common elements included in every brand identity guidelines:
  1. The colour palette that your brand uses.

2. The different typography associated with your brand including the various typefaces and families.

3. The different versions of your logo design and how they are to be used.

While those three elements are included in almost every brand guideline, there are other elements that can be included:
    • Graphic elements that can be used separately from a logo.
    • Symbols may be included, if your brand contains any.
    • Wordmarks are included when appropriate.
    • Brand tone is also included, if your brand has an established tone of voice for messages and content.

IT IS REALLY IMPORTANT
Without these guidelines, your brand’s message can change at any point just because a logo was used improperly or because someone didn’t know to use the wordmark instead of a graphic element.

OUGD503 Brief 02 Final

OUGD503 Brief 02 attempts

COVER

I also tried different Adrian's position. He might not fall but ramp to go to the hole

But in that case, the meaning is really different, Adrian don't want to deal with his problems and want to hide hisself in the hole.

TYPOGRAPHY

about the typography I wanted something that reminds a hand draw type. But it should be not to girly, to stay in the boy world.

For exemple I find this above not appropriate, too many curved shapes.

I'm pleased with this one, the Jackie alternate type.

COVER

When I associated both together (lines+Adrian) I noticed that the colours didn't really work together, I so try other colours for Adrian's clothes.

At this state I am not please with the overall design, for me something miss but I don't really know what. I asked friends and I realised what I would like is to show it's a comic book. Indeed, nothing really show that at this moment. So I worked on the Adrian's face to give him a 'funny' face.

He now looks at the reader, it can be a way to involved the reader.

The reader's eye is now catch by his big eyes, it also shows how worry is Adrian.
